HIFUMI KOUNO

Hifumi Kouno is a veteran Japanese video game director, designer, and writer, best known as the creator of the Clock Tower series — a landmark in the evolution of the survival horror genre. His innovative approach to storytelling and atmosphere helped define what psychological horror in video games could be.

Kouno-san first gained international recognition with the release of Clock Tower (1995) for the Super Famicom. The game introduced a groundbreaking point-and-click gameplay system and a focus on helpless protagonists, shifting the genre away from combat and toward tension, vulnerability, and emotional fear. This distinctive style influenced later classics such as Resident Evil, Silent Hill, and Fatal Frame.

Following his success at Human Entertainment, Kouno-san founded Nude Maker, a Tokyo-based game development studio known for its artistic and narrative-driven projects. Through Nude Maker, he collaborated with major publishers including Capcom, SEGA, and Kadokawa Games, contributing to cult favorites like Steel Battalion, Infinite Space, and NightCry.

With over three decades of experience, Hifumi Kouno remains one of Japan’s most respected creative voices in horror game design. His ability to combine psychological tension with cinematic storytelling continues to inspire developers and fans worldwide.

Despite his legendary status, Kouno-san has never appeared at a fan convention, making him a rare and exclusive guest — a true pioneer whose presence adds depth, authenticity, and prestige to any event.
