Usagi Tanaka – Japanese Designer, Art Director & Visual Creator

Usagi Tanaka is a Japanese designer, art director, and visual creator whose career spans some of the most recognizable franchises in Japanese gaming. Best known for his work on Silent Hill 3, Metal Gear Solid 4, and numerous Konami productions, he has spent more than two decades shaping memorable characters, visual identities, and cinematic presentations across games, film, and interactive media.

Beginning his career at Konami during the late 1990s, Tanaka-san contributed to a wide variety of projects as a designer and visual artist. Among horror fans, he is particularly recognized for his work on Silent Hill 3, where he designed Robbie the Rabbit, one of the franchise’s most enduring and recognizable characters. Originally appearing within the game’s unsettling amusement park imagery, Robbie has since become an iconic symbol associated with the Silent Hill series worldwide.

Beyond Silent Hill, Tanaka-san worked on titles including Zone of the Enders, The Sword of Etheria (OZ), Lunar Knights, and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. His career later expanded into artistic leadership roles, becoming Art Director on Dance Evolution, a milestone project that marked his transition into larger-scale visual direction and creative supervision.

His work also extends into cinematic production. As Ending Movie Director for NeverDead, he further explored visual storytelling through game cinematics, combining design, motion, and atmosphere to support narrative presentation.

Alongside his commercial work, Tanaka-san has continuously produced independent short films and experimental visual projects. His personal works have received recognition from the Japan Media Arts Festival and have been screened at SIGGRAPH, reflecting a creative career that extends beyond games into the broader fields of digital art and moving image.

Today, Tanaka continues to work across games, virtual worlds, XR experiences, and interactive entertainment, bringing together decades of experience in character design, visual development, and artistic direction.
